Marcin Gortat vs. Roy Hibbert

As the NBA regular season comes to an end we begin to look at next year's keeper options. Two interesting big men to keep an eye on for next season would be Marcin Gortat and Roy Hibbert. If your in a league where you can keep a handful of players and your looking to decide on a big man (if you don't own Bynum, Howard, Love, the Gasol's etc.) then you may have to choose between these two 2nd tier centers.

Marcin Gortat PHO

Gortat at age 28 had a coming out party in his second season with the Suns. Gortat averaged a double double (15.4 and 10) and played in all 66 games this year. In his first full season as a starter he shot 55% and had career highs in blocks, steals, points, minutes, and rebounds. Gortat was drafted on average in your fantasy leagues about 58th overall and finished as a top 30 player. Gortat is somewhat of a late bloomer but as long as he has Steve Nash to feed him the ball he offers double double potential next year. If you miss out on the high end centers, Gortat is a valid big man for your fantasy roster.

Roy Hibbert IND

Roy Hibbert was drafted on average in the mid 70's in your fantasy league this year. He finished the year by putting up top 40 numbers and at age 25 still has a lot of upside to offer. Hibbert had career highs in points, rebounds, FG %, minutes, and blocks. He averaged 12.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 29.8 minutes per game. Roy played in all but one game this year for the 3rd place Indiana Pacers. Hibbert should grow as he gets older and eventually could become a 20/12/2 guy. I love his potential but I want to make sure his body holds up before I move him to the head of the 2nd tier of centers.

If I had to choose between these two big men for next year, and next year only, I would go with Gortat only if Steve Nash returns to the Suns. I feel that Gortat's role in the pick and roll is what gives him his value. Hibbert's job for the Pacers is defense first and then clean up offensively down low on missed shots. If I'm deciding in a keeper league with long term implications then I would prefer Hibbert over Gortat on my team.
