2013 AFC Draft Grades

My 2013 AFC Draft Grades are based strictly on what each team did during the Draft. It will not reflect any off season moves or acquisitions. These grades will not reflect how I think each team will perform this upcoming season. That being said my grades will probably be a little rough on some of the teams that made (in my opinion) some bad off season moves that hurt their Draft strategy.

AFC West

Denver Broncos B-
There's no doubt in my mind that Von Miller is the centerpiece of the Broncos Defense. With that in mind John Elway used his first pick on Defensive Tackle Sylvester Williams from North Carolina. If Williams becomes a force in the middle of that Defense Von Miller could be the NFL Defensive Player of the Year next season. In the third round Denver went with Kayvon Webster, a Corner from South Florida. Webster now has a chance to learn from All Pro Cornerback Champ Bailey. In the second round the Broncos selected Montee Ball from Wisconsin. Ball has a chance to be the starter come Week 1 which would allow Ronnie Hillman and Knowshon Moreno to play to their strengths as number two backs. With all of that in mind I'm giving the Broncos a B- grade for their Draft.

Kansas City Chiefs B
Brandon Albert avoided a big issue when the Chiefs selected Eric Fisher number one overall as opposed to Luke Joeckel. Fisher's athleticism allows Albert to stay at Left Tackle as Fisher will almost certainly take over as the team's Right Tackle. The Chiefs then went Tight End (Travis Kelce) and Running Back (Knile Davis), before selecting Alabama Linebacker Nico Johnson in the fourth round. Kansas City took care of some needs but they will have to rely on new Head Coach Andy Reid to turn them into a .500 team this year. I'm giving the Chiefs a B grade.

Oakland Raiders C
I love the selections of Menelik Watson, Sio Moore and Tyler Wilson as the team's second, third and fourth round picks. I was not happy with Oakland's first round pick of D.J. Hayden. Hayden seemed to be a bit of a reach in my opinion; however, the team did fill out a specific need in drafting him. I would have liked to see Oakland stay and select Dee Milliner with the third overall pick rather than trade down with Miami. For that blunder I'm giving them a C grade.

San Diego Chargers A-
The Chargers took D.J. Fluker, Manti Te'o and Keenan Allen with their first three picks. Those picks alone force me to give the Bolts an A- grade for this year's draft.

AFC South

Houston Texans B+
The Texans did a terrific job of filling the weak spots on their roster during the draft. They needed a number two Wide Receiver; enter DeAndre Hopkins. They needed to sure up their Secondary; enter D.J. Swearinger. They needed to sure up their Offensive line; enter Brennan Williams and David Quessenberry. They also needed, most importantly, to find a sidekick for J.J. Watts; enter their third round selection of Sam Montgomery. The Texans will once again compete with the big boys in the AFC this year. I'm giving them a B+ for their Draft picks.

Indianapolis Colts B-
The Colts Draft was successful from the standpoint that they took some solid Offensive and Defensive Lineman. Andrew Luck now has an above average Offensive Line to work with which could mean big trouble for everyone else in the AFC South. I'm giving the Colts a B- grade.

Jacksonville Jaguars B
I thought Jacksonville did a good job not over thinking some of their selections. Luke Joeckel, Jonathan Cyprien and Dwayne Gratz were smart and safe moves; all three will probably end up starting this year. Their fourth round pick of Ace Sanders also has a chance to start as Justin Blackmon will open the year serving a four game suspension for failing a drug test. General Manager Dave Caldwell took a chance with his fifth round pick scooping up Michigan's Denard Robinson. Even if it doesn't workout on the field it could pay dividends by placing people in the stands. I'm giving the Jags a B grade.

Tennessee Titans B+
The Titans added some size on Offense and some speed on Defense during their Draft. Zavier Gooden, Blidi-Wreh Wilson and Lavar Edwards all add plus-speed to a Defense looking to earn some respect this season. Chance Warmack and Brian Schwenke add big size to an interior line that struggled all of last season. The Titans also added one of the most refined Wide Outs coming out of college this year in Justin Hunter. I'm giving the Titans a B+ grade for their Draft.

AFC North

Baltimore Ravens B
Goodbye Bernard Pollard, Ed Reed and Ray Lewis, hello Matt Elam and Arthur Brown. I thought Baltimore did a great job of filling out their roster after losing several key players this off season. It's going to be a hard to repeat but credit GM Ozzie Newsome for putting together another solid Draft. Baltimore gets a B grade.

Cincinnati Bengals A
I love the Bengals Draft this year for one reason; their aggressiveness. They went after the most dynamic Tight End in the player pool (Tyler Eifert) and they weren't afraid to take their guy Giovani Bernard as the first Running Back off the board. I thought they did a great job adding depth to their team which leads me to believe the Bengals are ready to make a serious run in the playoffs. I think Eifert is a Pro Bowl caliber Tight End who will open things up for A.J. Green all season long. I'm giving the Bengals an A grade.

Picture
wcpo.com
Cleveland Browns C+
The previous management only left this year's Brown's team with five selections in the draft. One of those picks; however, ended up being Barkevious Mingo. Mingo was selected 6th overall with the hopes that he'll give a good Brown's Defense an elite outside pass rusher. Cleveland spent their third round pick on Leon McFadden from San Diego State to play opposite of Joe Haden. Despite the lack of picks I'm giving the Browns a C+ grade for their Draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers A
The Steelers rocked the Draft this year by taking Jarvis Jones, Le'Veon Bell, Markus Wheaton and Shamarko Thomas with their first four picks. Their fifth pick, Landry Jones, was the cherry on top as the team finally found a backup to Big Ben whose name is not Charlie Batch. For the Landry Jones' pick alone they deserve an A.

AFC East

Buffalo Bills B
The Bills made several key Offensive pickups in this year's Draft but none more important than EJ Manuel. EJ will almost certainly start the season as the team's QB by default, but he will have some solid weapons to play with as the team drafted Robert Woods to play opposite of Stevie Johnson. Buffalo also selected Marquise Goodwin from Texas and Chris Gragg from Arkansas to catch passes from Manuel. On the Defensive side of the ball Buffalo made two key moves by drafting Kiko Alonso to play Inside Linebacker and Duke Williams to sure up their Secondary by playing Safety. I'm giving Buffalo a B for this year's draft.

Picture

Miami Dolphins C
I did not like the Dion Jordan pick at number three overall but I'm not going to argue with a team that was willing to trade up in order to make thatselection. The Dolphins went Defense heavy by taking four of their first five picks on the Defensive side of the ball. I'm giving Miami a C grade for their Draft.

New England Patriots C+
It was another typical Belichick draft as the Patriots moved down again and again collecting multiple selections in the middle rounds. When it came time to make their picks the Patriots did well taking Jamie Collins and Aaron Dobson in the second round. They went Corner then Safety in the third round selecting Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon. I like what the Patriots did but I'm not overly excited with some of the players they passed up by trading out of the first round. I'm giving them a C+ grade.

New York Jets B-
I thought new GM John Idzik did a terrific job replacing his best player Darrelle Revis with the best Corner in the Draft, Dee Milliner. The Jets also took Sheldon Richardson in the first round to play down in the trenches. Although Richardson is a great player, he has an issue staying on the field. The Jets made arguably the craziest selection in the entire Draft in the second round drafting Geno Smith. I don't hate the pick but it's going to be an awkward moment once Smith meets Mark Sanchez and the other 27 Quarterbacks on the Jets roster. I think I'm being generous but I'm giving the Jets a B- grade.

MLB Power Rankings

In this week's rankings I make some major changes inside my Top 10 and tweak the basement just enough to give Giancarlo Stanton some credit for his recent power surge. Week Five promises to be full of excitement with multiple playoff teams from last season getting set to face each other this week. I hate starting with the bottom feeders because it can be a bit depressing but I also think it's best if we start with a joke... like the Astros lineup. Here we go!

Week 5 Rankings

30. Huston Astros (7-18) --
The days of the "Killer B's" are long gone.

29. San Diego Padres (9-15) -2
If you have not experienced depression and would like to see what all the fuss is about; become a Padres fan.

28. Miami Marlins (6-19) +1
Giancarlo Stanton has now hit three home runs in his last two games. #SurrenderStanton

27. Chicago Cubs (9-15) +1
Two things that don't go together: The Cubs and Baseball in October. #1908

26. Seattle Mariners (11-16) -3
This week the Mariners get to take on the Orioles and Blue Jays.

25. Cleveland Indians (9-13) --
Mother Nature has not been kind to the Tribe this season. The Indians have had four games this year get postponed due to inclement weather.

Picture
barstoolsports.com
24. Chicago White Sox (10-14) -4
The White Sox just can't hit. They've lost nine games this season by two runs or less.

23. Toronto Blue Jays (9-17) -6
Four out of the Five AL East teams are currently 7-3 in their last ten games. The one team that can't claim that record is my Blue Jays. We're dangerously close to slipping into oblivion.

22. Minnesota Twins (11-10) +4
The Twins have been a nice surprise this season boasting an 11-10 record.

21. New York Mets (10-13) -3
Lucas Duda and Daniel Murphy are two of the most underrated contributors in the game today.

20. Philadelphia Phillies (12-14) +2
Getting Carlos Ruiz back is huge but the team is still awaiting the return of their spark plug, Ben Revere.

19. Los Angeles Angels (9-15) --
The Angels have 20 home runs as a team. John Buck has eight by himself this year.

18. Milwaukee Brewers (12-11) +3
Jean Segura... Jean Segura... Jean Segura - Hey this guy's pretty good.

Picture
philly.com
17. Los Angeles Dodgers (12-12) -1
Despite the Lakers being knocked out of the playoffs the Dodgers will still avoid a lot of the negative press coverage due to the media circus that is reporting on the Clippers.

16. Pittsburgh Pirates (15-10) +4
Andrew McCutchen has to get going. He's the heart of that Pittsburgh team.

15. Tampa Bay Rays (12-13) --
Who's more valuable to the Rays: Evan Longoria or Ben Zobrist?

14. Kansas City Royals (13-9) -1
The first place Kansas City Royals... Enjoy it while you can. #TigersAreComing

13. New York Yankees (15-9) +1
How are they doing this?

12. Arizona Diamondbacks (15-10) --
I told you they were going to be good.

11. Oakland Athletics (14-12) -9
After a hot start the A's have lost eight of their last ten games. Yoenis Cespedes' return is sure to turn things around though, right?

Picture
yahoo.com
10. San Francisco Giants (13-12) -2
The Giants have lost five in a row. That includes getting swept by the Padres. THE PADRES!

9. Colorado Rockies (15-10) +1
Troy Tulowitzki left Sunday's game with a shoulder injury. It's been a routine of his over the years to hit the DL around this time of the season.

8. Cincinnati Reds (14-12) -1
Tony Cingrani is now 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA. Where'd this guy come from?

7. Washington Nationals (13-12) -4
Gio has not been Gio while Dan Haren has been, well, Dan Haren. Both are a problem.

6. Baltimore Orioles (15-10) +5
Just because you can't name half of their starting lineup doesn't mean they aren't a good team.

5. St. Louis Cardinals (14-10) +4
The Cardinals offense relies on the knees of Carlos Beltran and those knees have a lot of mileage on them.

4. Detroit Tigers (13-10) --
The Tigers are tied with the Diamondbacks for the fewest errors in baseball this year. I bet you didn't see that coming!

3. Boston Red Sox (18-7) +2
I did not think I would say these words this year but the Boston Red Sox have the best record in baseball.

2. Atlanta Braves (15-9) -1
The Braves have scuffled as of late and it doesn't get any easier this week as they take on the Nationals and Mets.

1. Texas Rangers (16-9) +5
The Rangers have the lowest team ERA in baseball.

Fantasy Baseball Hitter Rankings
Going Up-ton

This will be the third edition of my Hitter Rankings this season. Here is a look back at my Fantasy Hitter Rankings from March 31st and April 13th. If you have any questions regarding my Rankings feel free to post them in the comment section below. Don't forget to checkout my brand new Top 300 Fantasy Baseball Keeper Rankings as well.

#3 Justin Upton ATL
It's hard to nitpick with what Upton has done but I think it's important to note that 11 of his 12 home runs this year have been solo shots. Despite that, the 25 year old is far and away the National League MVP front runner at this point in the season.

Picture

#23 Gaincarlo Stanton MIA
I'll get some negative remarks regarding my ranking of Stanton but he's a power hitter and power hitters are typically streaky. Last season he had seven different occurrences of hitting at least three home runs in a five game span. He's been a slow starter in the past as well. Last year he hit his first home run on April 29th.

#46 Pablo Sandoval SF
Pablo is currently batting .326 at home this season compared to .227 on the road. The Giants Third Baseman is on pace for a 20-plus home run season.

Picture
kshb.com
#66 Alcides Escobar KC
Through 19 games this season, Escobar has two home runs and four stolen bases. His career high in home runs is five (last season) and his career high in steals is 35 (last season). Escobar is proving his Milwaukee doubters wrong.

#73 Ryan Howard PHI
I don't know why the former NL MVP isn't getting any love this year. As of right now he has the lowest strikeout rate of his career and a 14.3% HR/FB rate.

#80 Michael Cuddyer COL
Cuddyer was last week's "One To Watch" and now he's in the Top 100. The Rockies Outfielder has continued his tare through the 2013 season. He now has five home runs and two steals to go along with his .325 average.

#98 Will Middlebrooks BOS
Despite racking up 29 strikeouts to just three walks in his first 87 at bats this year, Middlebrooks has hit six home runs and three doubles. The 24 year old seems to be a little too aggressive this season at the dish but it's nothing new considering he had a 70:13 K:BB ratio last season. The biggest reason why he's hitting under .200 would be his .189 BABIP. Last year he had a .335 BABIP which led to a .288 batting average.

One To Watch

Jean Segura MIL
The Brewers' Shortstop already has seven stolen bases this year to go along with his .359 average. Prior to the season I predicted him to be the 24th best Shortstop and so far, so good. He's currently the Brewers leader in batting average, hits, OBP and steals. At this rate he'll be a Top 100 player next month.

I'm also keeping a close eye on Orioles Outfielder Nate McClouth.

Fantasy Baseball Starter Rankings
Hey Yu!

Most starters have gone through roughly 1/6 of their season starts already so now is the time to begin evaluating those borderline Starters you're not sure of. Josh Johnson, C.J. Wilson and Tim Hudson have all fallen outside of my Top 50 while Anibal Sanchez and Matt Harvey have cracked the Top 25.

Picture
dallasnews.com
#6 Yu Darvish TEX
Yu Darvish has been outstanding this year with a 4-1 record and his 49 strikeouts leads all of baseball. The Rangers' Ace has not allowed more than three hits in four of his five starts this season. He also has three double-digit strikeout games this year.

#13 Matt Cain SF
Cain has allowed six home runs in his five starts this season. His current 1.26 WHIP is the highest it's been since the 2008 season when he finished with a 1.36 WHIP. Cain's next scheduled start is against Arizona so we'll see if he can regain his form before he gets pushed outside of my Top 20.

#38 Shelby Miller STL
Miller was the "One To Watch" in my last Rankings and rightfully so. He's now 3-1 this year with a 9.36 K/9 rate.

#50 Hisashi Iwakuma SEA
The Mariners' starter has held opposing batters to a .164 batting average this season. He has 29 strikeouts to only five walks this year and with a 2-1 record he now becomes a must-own in all Fantasy formats.

One To Watch

Roy Halladay PHI
I'm not a big fan of Halladay but he has won two of his last three starts for the Phillies. Halladay has 16 strikeouts in his last 21 innings of work (against Miami, St. Louis and Pittsburgh). If he can keep this up he'll make my Top 50 next month.
