2012-2013 Fantasy Basketball Mock Draft 1.0

10/14/2012

Fantasy Basketball Mock Draft 1.0
2012-2013 Season

Entering the fantasy basketball season, like all other sports, it's important to run through a handful of mock drafts before you get into the real thing. You don't want to be the guy that takes a 6th round player in the 3rd round because you recognize the name. For this mock I will base the scoring on a standard rotisserie league (Ten Teams) with points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and turnovers as the categories. I'm basing this mostly on Average Draft Positioning but I threw in a bit of strategy as I filled out each team's roster.

Round One

1. LeBron James, Mia SF
2. Kevin Durant, OKC SF
3. Kevin Love, Min PF/C
4. Chris Paul, LAC PG
5. Deron Williams, Bkn PG
6. Russell Westbrook, OKC PG
7. Andrew Bynum, Phi C
8. Josh Smith, Atl PF/SF
9. Al Jefferson, Uta C/PF
10. Dwyane Wade, Mia SG

Round Two

11. DeMarcus Cousins, Sac PF/C
12. Dirk Nowitzki, Dal PF
13. Marc Gasol, Mem C
14. Kyrie Irving, Cle PG
15. James Harden, OKC SG
16. Pau Gasol, LAL PF/C
17. Dwight Howard, LAL C
18. Kobe Bryant, LAL SG
19. Rajon Rondo, Bos PG
20. LaMarcus Aldridge, Por PF/C

I don't necessarily care for Kyrie Irving in the Top 15 but the upside will be too good for most of us to pass up. The lack of Shooting Guards (3) and Small Forwards (3) in the first two rounds will be an issue for many fantasy owners, plan on it. Keep an eye on each player's position flexibility in the next few rounds.

Round Three

21. Paul Millsap, Uta PF
22. Ty Lawson, Den PG/SG
23. Serge Ibaka, OKC C/PF
24. Carmelo Anthony, NY SF/PF
25. Rudy Gay, Mem SF
26. Al Horford, Atl C/PF
27. Blake Griffin, LAC PF
28. Goran Dragic, Pho PG
29. Brandon Jennings, Mil PG
30. Monta Ellis, Mil PG/SG

Round Four

31. Greg Monroe, Det C/PF
32. David Lee, GS PF/C
33. Ryan Anderson, Nor PF
34. Andre Iguodala, Den SF/PF
35. Marcin Gortat, Pho C
36. Stephen Curry, GS PG/SG
37. Chris Bosh, Mia PF/C
38. Steve Nash, LAL PG
39. Roy Hibbert, Ind C
40. Mike Conley Jr., Mem PG

There are some high upside wing players going in the third round. Rudy Gay is one of my sleeper MVP candidates. Serge Ibaka will be taken by the owner intent on winning Blocks this year. If you miss out on Ibaka there will be guys available in the later rounds that provide blocks, don't reach for a Hibbert or Gortat this early.

Best Value in rounds 3 & 4: Goran Dragic (28th) and Stephen Curry (36th)

Worst Value in rounds 3 & 4: Ryan Anderson (33rd) and Chris Bosh (37th)

Heading into the 5th and 6th rounds most rosters would begin to balance out as team's will look to fill in the rest of their starting lineups.

Round Five

41. Anthony Davis, Nor PF/C
42. Eric Gordon, Nor SG
43. Paul Pierce, Bos SF/SG
44. Tony Parker, SA PG
45. Amar'e Stoudemire, NY PF/C
46. Nicolas Batum, Por SF/SG
47. Paul George, Ind SG
48. John Wall, Wsh PG
49. Joakim Noah, Chi C/PF
50. Danny Granger, Ind SF

Round Six

51. Marcus Thornton, Sac SG
52. Tyreke Evans, Sac PG/SG
53. Arron Afflalo, Orl SG
54. Brook Lopez, Bkn C
55. Kevin Garnett, Bos PF
56. Tyson Chandler, NY C
57. Joe Johnson, Bkn SG
58. Gerald Wallace, Bkn SF
59. Ersan Ilyasova, Mil SF
60. Jrue Holiday, Phi PG

John Wall has all the talent in the world, so why do I have him going 48th overall to a team that already drafted Goran Dragic? It's simple really; Wall lacks focus and a perimeter shot. The Wizards did finish strong last year but until Wall can prove himself to be a better shooter, the 5th round is fair value.

As for Lopez, Garnett and Chandler going in the 6th round, I love it. Those three guys will help balance out any fantasy roster that lacks size down low. None of those guys are flashy by any means but the numbers will be there at season's end.

Round Seven

61. Zach Randolph, Mem PF/C
62. Andrei Kirilenko, Min SF
63. Danilo Gallinari, Den SF/PF
64. Kenneth Faried, Den PF/SF
65. Tim Duncan, SA PF/C
66. Klay Thompson, GS SG
67. Wesley Matthews, Por SG
68. Carlos Boozer, Chi PF/C
69. Kris Humphries, Bkn PF
70. JaVale McGee, Den C

Round Eight

71. Luol Deng, Chi SF
72. Andrea Bargnani, Tor PF
73. Rodney Stuckey, Det SG
74. Kyle Lowry, Tor PG
75. Jeremy Lin, Hou PG
76. Andrew Bogut, GS C
77. Gordon Hayward, Uta SG
78. Anderson Varejao, Cle C
79. Luis Scola, Pho PF
80. Lou Williams, Atl PG/SG

At this point in the draft you look for swing players. What I mean by that is you need to look for players that have high upside or who will provide you with plus production in at least one category. Players like O.J. Mayo have huge upside but a veteran like Ray Allen will net your team a good amount of three's on a nightly basis.

Focus on how you built your team early on and then find out if you want upside or consistency.

86. George Hill, Ind PG/SG
87. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Cha SF
