Melky Cabrera Suspended
This is huge news coming out today. Melky Cabrera, star outfielder for the San Fransisco Giants, has been suspended 50 games for an elevated testosterone drug test. This suspension will be effective immediately.
The 27-year-old Cabrera came on the scene last year, batting .305 with 18 home runs and 87 RBI's with Kansas City. He hadn't been much of a "star", per say, in years before 2011. Because of his tremendous '11 campaign, he was traded to the San Fransisco Giants in a deal for LHP Jonathan Sanchez and LHP Ryan Verdugo last winter. Skeptics believed that his "Royal" season was just a flash in the pan, but he came out this season even better, batting an unbelievible .346, with 11 bombs and 60 driven in. He even leads the league in hits (156) and runs (84). This production cannot be replaced by anyone that the Giants have. This is huge news.
The reason this hits home so much for Giants fans is because the 50-game suspension means Cabrera's 2012 season is basically over. The Giants only have 45 games left, coming into Wednesday afternoon's affair with the Nationals. And with the Giants tied for the division lead with the Dodgers (both at 64-53), this could spell trouble for the Giants playoff hopes. Remember when the Dodgers lost Matt Kemp? Ya, same thing.
Because of today's news, I believe the Giants will slowly, but surely, fall out of the NL West race. Arizona is starting to click, and the Dodgers are sticking tough. It is hard for any team to lose argueably their best player and not pay for it. Because of this, I have switched back to the Arizona Diamondbacks winning the NL West.
