Giants Load Up, Phillies Give Up
Trade Deadline Deals Part 7
On Tuesday the Philadelphia Phillies traded Hunter Pence and cash considerations to the San Francisco Giants for Nate Schierholtz, Tommy Joseph and Seth Rosin. Joseph is one of the many future power bats that we will see behind the plate in a few years. The days of a defensive catcher has passed as GM's look to get Buster Posey-type production from their backstops. Although he is still a few years away from making it to Big League's, Joseph is already ranked as the 10th best catching prospect in the game today (4th best overall prospect in the Phillies farm). In Rosin, the Phils get a right hander who has a low to mid 90's fastball with a decent change up. He began his career as a starter but when he was moved to the bullpen many scouts considered him a solid middle relief guy on the fast track to the Major Leagues. Rosin may get a look in September as the Phillies try to figure out what they have in the former Minnesota Golden Gopher.
Nate Schierholtz is an underrated player who offers one thing to the Stanton, Bautista, Plouffe Fantasy owners... an answer. I'm an owner of Stanton, Bautista and Plouffe in many leagues (I actually own all 3 on my keeper league team which I'm currently trying to 3peat in) and I am seriously considering adding the .270 career hitter. Schierholtz may get the everyday gig as a member of the Phillies outfield. He will hit towards the top of a lineup that still has Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. Before the trade, Nate was 4 for 13 with 2 home runs in Citizens Bank Park this year. For me, his fantasy value is slightly above injury replacement level.

Hunter Pence going to San Francisco is a big move that will affect the whole Giants lineup. Pence currently has a .271 average with 17 home runs to go along with a modest 59 RBI. He will hit in the middle of a Giants lineup that is 25th in runs scored but 11th in batting average. He may be the "Big Bopper" they were looking for to hit along side Melky Cabrera, Pablo Sandoval (DL), Angel Pagan and Buster Posey. Pence should be 100% owned in every league. As a Pence owner I'm staying put with the slugging outfielder. |
Keep in mind the Phillies continued to rebuild as they sent Shane Victorino to the Dodgers in a deal I dubbed "The Flyin Hawaiian Lands in LA"
The Giants also received Marco Scutaro in a trade that sent minor league infielder Charlie Culberson to the Colorado Rockies. Scutaro will play third until Sandoval comes off the Disabled List and then fill in as a role player off the bench unless Theriot or Crawford struggle up the middle.

Pirates Buy Low on Snider but give up on McGehee
The Pirates acquired Travis Snider from the Toronto Blue Jays for relief pitcher Brad Lincoln. The move makes sense for the Blue Jays who had acquired potential closer Steve Delabar earlier in the day from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for outfielder Eric Thames. Snider has a lot of potential but he has yet to prove himself an everyday player. This was the outfield bat the Pirates wanted to bring in and I love the move. The Pirates also brought in Gaby Sanchez and pitcher Kyle Kaminska from the Marlins for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and a 2013 competitive balance lottery draft pick.
The Pirates weren't done yet as they hooked up with the Yankees bringing in a quality bullpen arm. Chad Qualls was traded for Casey McGehee and cash considerations. McGehee seems to be the perfect fit in New York as the Yankees are in desperate need of a corner infielder with Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira expected to miss some time. As of right now A-Rod is slated to miss at least 6 more weeks and Teixeira's recent hand injury will have him out of the lineup for the next three days and possibly longer if there is a setback in his reevaluation. I think Casey McGehee has little fantasy value unless Teixeira lands on the DL. |
With the call up of top prospect Starling Marte and the acquisition of the 24 year old Snider and slugger Gaby Sanchez, the Pirates are building a contender for years to come. I'm calling it now, Pirates make the playoffs!
