Hanley to the Dodgers
Trade Deadline Deals Part 3
On Wednesday, July 25th, the Miami Marlins traded their elite third baseman Hanley Ramirez along with LHP Randy Choate to the Los Angeles Dodgers for RHP Nathan Eovaldi and RHP Scott McGough. This move was made by the Marlins to clear salary space and to finally cut ties with the disgruntled star.
Hanley Ramirez was a one time batting champ, 3 time All Star and one of the handful of players with 30-plus home run power and 30-plus steal potential. He will now hit in the middle of a vastly improved Dodger lineup. I consider this move a huge win for the Dodgers, they needed a shortstop and they got arguably the best in the game. |
Hanley has a lot to prove to the team that forced him to move to a corner spot after throwing their money at prized free agent Jose Reyes this off season (more on him in the next paragraph). I've always been a fan of Hanley despite his sometime sluggish efforts in the field. I think he has what it takes to become one of the game's best hitters again and this change in scenery may be just what he needed to get going. Nathan Eovaldi was once a top prospect who has had a rough go at it since being called up on August 6th, 2011. In his short career (16 games started, 4 relief appearances) the 22 year old is 2-8 with a 3.96 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. Eovaldi will most likely spend the rest of the season in the Marlins farm system.
The Marlins may not be done making moves as it is well known that they are actively shopping around ace pitcher Josh Johnson. Dealing with injuries over the past few seasons Johnson has not been up to par and since he is making almost $14 million this season, Miami management wants to bring in some prospects in return for the 6' 7" righty. For his career, Johnson is 54-30 with a 3.14 ERA. The Texas Rangers are considered to be the most active in pursuing his services. There are also rumors surrounding shortstop Jose Reyes being on the trade block as well. I didn't understand it either but Miami has always been a team that will cut corners to save a buck or two. If it means admitting they made a mistake by signing Reyes then they will do it to save a few million. Teams that could use Reyes' services would have to be the Tigers, Blue Jays or Red Sox. |
My projections for Hanley Ramirez the rest of the way:
Batting Average - .290
Home Runs - 13
Steals 16
RBI - 49
Runs - 33

The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to terms with Cole Hamels on a six-year contract through 2018. The contract is the second richest (behind CC Sabathia) and is worth $144 million. Hamels has proven that he is worth the money but the biggest question surrounding the Phils has to be; where will the offense come from? My guess is that Shane Victorino will be dealt within the week in order to bring back some prospect hitting. |
