One of my teams is in an AL/NL h2h keeper league. Basically, I own a major league team and have to keep its catcher and four other players on the roster at all times to be considered legal. I get sixteen players, seven reserves, and can carry up to three guys on the DL. Lineups are set each Monday before the first game of the day is played. There are no substitutions during the week. Even for injury.
Kinda dumb.
But it is what it is, and as I have not received any invitations in my inbox to help make the league less aggravating, I do not anticipate any great changes.
I will temper my above criticism, which is way legit btw, by admitting to howling with joy when one of my opponents loses a stud Tuesday evening and has to play with one less man for the rest of the cycle (This week: Melky Cabrera). Nevertheless, I am also usually suffering. My team has been plagued with injuries to key players week after week, and I have not been above .500 since the second game. The words roller and coaster come to mind. I go from best to worst in one game sometimes. But I am almost there. I currently sit at fifth in the power rankings in a league where only the top four teams make the playoffs.
Naturally, like any fantasy competitor, I want to grind my opponents’ entrails into the sand while the Rocky theme plays. Unfortunately, my league does not trade much. And the offers are always insults. Samardzija for Bud Norris the week before Norris has two starts. Adam Dunn for Joey Bats. Viciedo for Beltran. Et cetera.
Which leaves the wire for finding replacements. Actually, it is not not that bad because there are only twelve teams in the league, and they all carry twenty-six man rosters. Some of my wire guys have paid dividends and remain with the team: Hammel, McDonald, Pagan, Goldschmidt, Brantley. Others, who I jumped ship on for one reason or another continue to perform elsewhere: Altuve, Kubel, LaHair, Daniel Murphy. Is Murphy performing? I am SUCH an American League guy.
There have been some bumps in the road, too. Alcides Escobar (mercifully gone after today), and Anthony Bass come to mind. Tomlin. Masterson. Although, I think Bass can be money. Regardless, I still might drop him for Homer Bailey tonight. Sue me. I drank the Homer Kool-Aid. And plus, I love me some waiver wire action.
Finally, there are others I am not sure about yet. Cobb. Oswalt. Vogelsong, although Vogelsong’s three hit performance yesterday assuages some fears :)
All in all, I have employed twenty four batters and twenty two pitchers during ten weeks of baseball this spring. My record sits at 4-5 on the last afternoon of the scoring period. I am playing my commish. He leads by a few points and has one more start than me. I have Pestano, Venters, and Romo, and my league rewards big time for holds. If I can get back over the .500 mark all will be well around here until week 11 begins tomorrow.
These are the things I think about.
Good luck in the upcoming week!
