NBA Draft Grades

The 2012 NBA Draft is over. Now these youngsters start practice. Practice!?!? Yes kiddos, your not as good as Allen Iverson... yet. I'm looking at you Damian Lillard.

  Grade A

Charlotte
Michael Jordan got one right. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (#2) is a high motor kid that can light it up at any given time. MKG should bring a new attitude to a locker room that is in desperate need of a change. Jeff Taylor (#31) is a terrific defender with decent potential. These moves won't make the Bobcats a 20 game winner in 2013 but after only winning 7 games last year, there is nowhere to go but up. I hope.

Golden State
The Warriors snagged Harrison Barnes (#7) after he fell to them, I didn't hink he would be on the board at this point. Barnes was one of my favorite players in this year's draft. Golden State also drafted two centers Festus Ezeli (#30) and Ognjen Kuzmic (#52). Early in the 2nd round they took Draymond Green (#35), a forward who will give great value to a new look roster that now includes Andrew Bogut.

Houston
The Rockets had a plethora of picks in this year's draft. Keep in mind that all of their picks are probably on the trade block as it is no secret the Rockets want Pau Gasol. Jeremy Lamb (#12) is an athletic shooting guard that will give them some back court depth. Royce White (#16) has been compared to Charles Barkley and rightfully so. I think White could come in and light the league on fire. Terrence Jones (#18) will give Houston a nice inside-out game that they severely lack. All in all, I think the Rockets had a very good draft. Now we wait and see who gets traded.

New Orleans
Anthony Davis (#1) will be the foundation that the Hornets can build on for years to come. Austin Rivers (#10) has star potential but will have to find a way to work with Eric Gordon in that back court. Darius Miller (#46) will add some depth to a roster that traded away Trevor Ariza and Emeka Okafor on draft day. As a whole, the Hornets seemed to make all the right moves this past Thursday. If Davis can grow into the player we all think he will be, the Hornets may challenge for a playoff spot within the next year or two.

The perfect draft?

Oklahoma City
The Thunder only had one pick but they nailed it. The risk was worth the potential reward with the small forward out of Baylor. Perry Jones III (#28) will be a key member of the Thunder's rotation in 2013.

Sacramento
I think the Kings grabbed the third best player in the draft with Thomas Robinson (#5). I love Robinson on the Kings roster. I predicted him to go to the Kings in my mock. Sacramento is quietly building a contender. Later in the draft the Kings added some depth with Orlando Johnson (#36).

 Above Average

Atlanta
The Hawks took, arguably, the best shooter in the draft in John Jenkins (#23). Atlanta is already a dynamic team with Joe Johnson and Josh Smith, but Jenkins should stretch the floor for them in 2013. They also took Mike Scott (#43) in the second round to give the bench some energy.

Boston
The Celtics wasted no time finding replacements for KG and Brandon Bass (if they don't return). The C's drafted Jared Sullinger (#21) and Fab Melo (#22) in the first round and Kris Joseph (#51) late in the second round. Sullinger's back issues had him fall fairly low on many team's draft boards. Boston had no issues taking the 20 year old out of Ohio State. Fab Melo should come in right away and be a plus defender for Doc Rivers. The Celtics got better as they await Garnett's decision on retirement.

Chicago
By taking Marquis Teague (#29) the Bulls sured up their back court. Derrick Rose is now considered an injury risk player but Teague is a more than capable back up. Keep an eye on the Bulls making a trade or two before the season starts.

Detroit
The Pistons had Andre Drummond (#9) fall to them and now have one of the more underrated big men combo in the game with Greg Monroe. The upside Drummond has is by far the most by any big man in the draft not named Anthony Davis. The Pistons also drafted Khris Middleton (#39) and Kim English (#44). Middleton's stock fell due to a career filled with injures and English is a good player that can produce on offense and defense, he's just undersized.
Picture
Detroit is making progress but don't book your playoff tickets just yet

Memphis
The Grizzlies made the best of their one and only pick. Tony Wroten Jr (#25) will be a solid distributor coming off the bench. I'm a big fan of Memphis and if Wroten Jr. can fulfill his role as a solid backup point guard, the Grizzlies will challenge the top dogs in the Western Conference next year.

Milwaukee
The Bucks drafted John Henson (#14). He will bring a shot blocking mentally to the undersized team. Milwaukee also snagged Doron Lamb (#42) who will add depth to a back court that already has Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings.

Portland
Rebuilding Portland starts with Damian Lillard (#6). He is the first piece to the puzzle that is far from being completed. The Trailblazers later took Meyers Leonard (#11), Will Barton (#40) and Tyshawn Taylor (#41). Taylor was later traded to Brooklyn.

San Antonio
The Spurs only had one pick this year. They nailed it with Marcus Denmon (#59). Although he's undersized, Denmon is a dynamic shooter who won't back down from a challenge. He very well could be the steal of the draft. If he buys into Coach Pop's system he may turn into the next Manu Ginobili.

Washington
Comaprisons between Ray Allen and Bradley Beal (#3) seem fair but where the Wizards improved was with the Trevor Ariza, Emaka Okafor trade. I've always been an Ariza fan since his days with the Lakers. The Wizards later added Thomas Satoransky (#32). Santoransky is a big guard that can attack the rim but lacks an efficient jumper. Washington got better but their fate depends on John Wall's ability to lead them against the elite teams in the East.

 Just Average

Cleveland
Dion Waiters (#4) made no sense to me but I'm guessing Dan Gilbert wanted to give Kyrie Irving a solid 2 guard. Tyler Zeller (#17) was traded from Dallas to Cleveland. The Cavs filled some needs but they would have received a higher grade if they were able to trade down and grab Waiters a little bit later, 4th is too high for me.

Dallas
I was going to give the Mavericks a B for drafting Tyler Zeller, then they traded him to the Cavs. At that point I was going to give them a D but they proceeded to nail 2 of their next 3 picks (all from Cleveland). Jared Cunningham (#24), a dynamic guard that will fit the Mavericks perfectly. Early in the second round they stole Jae Crowder (#34) who is a stat sheet stuffer. I'm not too high on Bernard James (#33) but he seems like a hard worker with some good physical attributes. Then there's this...

 Friday's Four Team Trade

Mavericks get: Cash and draft rights to Tadija Dragicevic
Clippers get: Lamar Odom
Rockets get: draft rights to Furkan Aldemir
Jazz get: Mo Williams

Picture
Lamar Odom is going back to where he started his career
Orlando
The Magic selected Andrew Nicholson (#19) and Kyle O'Quinn (#49). Nicholson makes a lot of sense, if the Magic trade Ryan Anderson, Nicholson could fill in right away.

Phoenix
Drafting Kendall Marshall (#13) is a good backup plan if they lose Steve Nash but wouldn't have been smarter to draft a scorer to put next to Nash? They essentially gave Nash the "okay" to leave because they now have his replacement.

At Least You Didn't Fail

Brooklyn
Despite only having one draft pick, the Nets walked away with 3 new faces on draft night. Ilkan Karaman (#57) was selected by the team late in the second round. The Nets then traded for Tyshawn Taylor (#41) and Tornike Shengelia (#54). I like Taylor but the draft as a whole wasn't that high on the Nets' priority list. Resigning Deron Williams tops that list.

Los Angeles Lakers
I love the Lakers but this draft meant nothing to them. Robert Sacre (#60) is a smart 7 foot center but is nothing more than the second coming of Jordan Hill. The Lakers did trade for Darius Odom-Johnson (#55) from Dallas. DOJ will be a shooter that should produce off the bench but won't make too many highlight reels. The Lakers are currently shopping Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. Possible landing spots for these two are, but not limited too: Houston, Orlando, Brooklyn, Chicago and/or Dallas.

Miami
The Heat traded away Arnett Moultrie (#27) to the 76ers. In return they received a future first round pick and Justin Hamilton (#45). Hamilton is a 7 footer that will add depth to a shallow group of big men in south beach. I know Pat Riley said the trade had nothing to do with the luxury tax but I don't believe him. They would have been better off with the hard working Moultrie, but now they have some money to offer up free agent Ray Allen.

Philadelphia
I think the 76ers reached for Maurice Harkless (#15). Philadelphia is trying to trade for a big man so if Harkless ends up in a different uniform I wouldn't be surprised. They did trade for Arnette Moultrie (#27) from the Miami Heat. Moultrie is very good in the pick and roll but they had to give up a future first round pick for him. Also, keep an eye on Andre Iguodala, I think he is on the trade block. Possible suitors: LA Lakers (I want him in LA) and the Chicago Bulls.

Toronto
Terrence Ross (#8) is a good fit on that team but I'm not buying into the rest of their selections. Quincy Acey (#37) and Tomislav Zubcic (#56) weren't the best value on the board where they were dafted.

 Who Failed

Denver
And I've always been a fan of the Nuggets! Look, I'm not saying Evan Fournier (#20) isn't a good player but if they wanted a true "shooter" they should have taken John Jenkins. They later took Quincy Miller (#38) who left college a year early in my opinion. Their last pick Izzet Turkyilmaz (#50), from Turkey, is a big man with no muscle. Basically the "No Name Nuggets" just enforced the title we gave them this past January. I still think they will make the playoffs in 2013, but I'm having a hard time believing the players they drafted will play a major role this season. Of course, Head Coach George Karl seems to always make winners out of his teams despite losing big name talents (Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson, J.R. Smith, and Chauncey Billups). They've made the playoffs every year since the 2002-2003 season.
Picture
Fournier could be great or he could be the second coming of Nikoloz Tskitishvili

Indiana
Taking Miles Plumlee (#26) baffles me. As Roy Hibbert starts to figure things up you take a 7 footer in the first round? There were more refined big men available at that point; Moultrie, Jones III and Ezeli, just to name a few. But like the Nuggets, I don't think this draft will hurt their chances this year. They still remain in my top 4 in the Eastern Conference.

Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers selected Furkan Aldemir (#53) from Turkey and traded him away to the Rockets (scroll up a bit, he was apart of the four team trade). The selection warrants an F but receiving Lamar Odom should help the Clippers maintain last season's success. I still don't see a championship team with this group of players.

Minnesota
The T-Wolves only had one pick in this draft and taking Robbie Hummel (#58) was nothing special. I wanted to see them go after a guard but Hummel is a decent shooter that should be able to come off the bench and average 3-5 points a game in 2013. I would have loved to see the Wolves take Marcus Denmon from Missouri. Denmon then went to the Spurs right after Hummel was drafted.

New York
Kostas Papanikolaou (#48) from Greece is a project. He may not come over to the state's this upcoming season.

Utah
Kevin Murphy (#47) is a decent scorer but trading for Mo Williams the next day tells me one thing; Murphy will be at the end of the bench for a while. The Jazz needed a defender at the two guard, that is not Murphy's game. I think the Jazz messed this pick up.
