MLB Contract Extensions
About one week after the Reds locked up Joey Votto, General Manager Walt Jocketty opened his checkbook again for the other star on the right side of the infield. Second Baseman Brandon Phillips inked a 6 year, 72.5 million dollar deal, which will keep him with the team through 2017. This move, like the Votto deal, proves to the Cincinnati fans that their team is ready to dominate the NL Central for years to come. Phillips is a 3 time Gold Glove award winner and a two time All Star. He is arguably the best Fantasy Second Baseman in the National League.
The Cleveland Indians have locked up future All Star Catcher Carlos Santana to a 5 year, 21 million dollar deal. Santana is far and away the best hitter on that team and is extremely important to the future of that line up. The Indians want Santana's bat in the lineup so bad they give him at bats at first base and DH to keep his legs fresh and to get him out from behind the plate. Santana suffered a season ending injury in 2010 while catching against the Red Sox when colliding with Ryan Kalish. Since then he has returned and stayed healthy. He could arguably be the #1 Fantasy Catcher in 2012. This signing comes one week after the Tribe gave a 2 year extension to Venezuelan Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.
Texas has continued their off season spending spree into the season as evident in Tuesday's contract agreement with Second Baseman Ian Kinsler. Kinsler agreed to a 5 year, 75 million dollar deal. His career has been riddled with injuries but when he is healthy he puts up numbers similar to fellow American League All Star Second Basemen Robinson Cano and Dustin Pedroia. Kinsler who came out of the University of Missouri, now at age 29, fits the Rangers power/speed lineup perfectly as he has been hitting lead off for them so far this season. If Kinsler can stay healthy for the whole year he will have a chance at a 30/30 season.
