Hello Football Junkies,
I haven't forgotten about you. I do plan on writing some football articles throughout the off season to keep you updated on things that may affect your favorite teams or, more importantly, your fantasy football team's keepers. Most of the big name free agents have been signed and now teams are looking towards the draft to finish filling out their rosters. There has been a lot of big news this off season. It seems like the NFL is the only sport with bigger headlines in the off season than the regular season.
The Saints:
After the dust clears it appears that the Saints will be without their head coach Sean Payton for the season. The organization has, in my mind, three choices for picking their next coach. They can stay from within the organization and promote from within whether it be Pete Carmichael or Steve Spagnuolo or even offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. The Saints ownership may choose to pursue future hall of fame coach Bill Parcells. Parcells was and still is a mentor to Payton as he is one of the many successful coaches to come out from under the Parcells coaching tree. The third option would be to stay outside the organization but to bring in a low profile former coach that has previously worked with the Saints staff. Marty Schottenheimer is one name that comes to my mind. What we do know is that the New Orleans Saints are going to understand that the punishment will be fitting of the crime.
Free Agency:
We all know the fall out of the Peyton Manning saga. Manning to Denver, Tebow to the Jets, Alex Smith back to the 49ers, and the Miami Dolphins stuck with whoever they had. Some of the underrated signings that did not get a lot of press, but are solid moves are:
C-Jeff Saturday to the Packers
RB-Michael Bush to the Bears
CB/KR-Brandon Carr to the Cowboys
LB-Dan Conner to the Cowboys
CB-Cortland Finnegan to the Rams
QB-Matt Flynn to the Seahawks
WR-Pierre Garcon to the Redskins
WR-Anthony Gonzalez to the Patriots
RB-BenJarvus Green-Ellis to the Bengals
RB-Peyton Hillis to the Chiefs
WR-Vincent Jackson to the Bucs
DE-Mario Williams to the Bills
WR-Mike Wallace is still available as far as I know. (Please come to Denver)
Major Trades:
We have discussed a handful of big trades in the NFL off season on our podcasts but I will list a few just in case you missed our shows:
WR-Brandon Marshall to the Bears
WAS sends picks to STL for the #2 overall draft pick
QB-Tim Tebow to the Jets
LB-DeMeco Ryans to the Eagles (I love this move)
Story Lines and Questions Entering the Draft:
Colts have to take Andrew Luck #1 overall right?
-Yes, I think he is the best pick here and I understand RG3 is very good I don't feel he is as marketable in the Indianapolis market as Luck would be. The colts have to pick the best option to replace Manning not only on the field but off the field as well.
Is RG3 the answer in Wshington?
-He should be, if the Shannahan coaches don't force him to play a specific style he can be successful. Mike Shannahan had success with his past QB's when they ran the zone offense and he was able to get his QB outside of the pocket. RG3 can excel in this system if the coaches play to his strengths.
Can the Giants repeat?
-Anything is possible, look even if they have a similar season statistically it will still be hard to repeat. We shouldn't forget that if it wasn't for two muffed punts the Giants may have not even made it to the Super Bowl last year.
Will the Falcons take the next step?
I hope so, for Matt Ryan's sake anyway. I think they have the players in place and everyone is familiar with the system it just comes down to how they approach the playoffs mentally. Last year they looked out of place.
Is Trent Richardson fantasy relevant next season?
YES, built like a freight train he will come in and light the league on fire. This is just my own personal opinion.
Mike Wallace?
I know I know, I hope he comes to Denver but realistically I'd say landing spots for him are St. Louis, New York (both teams), Miami, Arizona, or anyone willing to pay the money he wants. Honestly your guess is as good as mine.
Tampa Bay is set to make a nice run, right?
I'd say yes, I think Josh Freeman makes a lot of progress and Vincent Jackson is key to his QB's success.
Anything else we should keep an eye on?
